Law School Research Fellows Program

In the spring of 2006, the Panetta Institute created a special research and study program that allows highly qualified second and third year students to serve as research fellows here at the Institute. Originally developed with Santa Clara University School of Law, the program has grown to include students from the Monterey College of Law.

Participants are selected by the deans of their law schools and then work on site at the Panetta Institute gaining firsthand experience and instruction in public policy research and assisting the Institute with research and analysis on issues relevant to its work and mission.  Fellows work under the direction of Panetta Institute staff and attorneys.  In addition to research work, the fellows attend special sessions with highly qualified policy speakers. Following completion of the program, fellows receive academic credit for their work.

The fellows conduct research in support of our annual Lecture Series and other key policy issues. Past areas of research have included health care policy, literacy, the federal budget process, ocean and other environmental protection, and national service.

Thus far, twenty-five students have each served one semester.
